 A "Doable" Option For Night Splints November 29, 2008

As the name implies, these are splints you wear at night. Most of them look like big boots, which is why I like the Futuro Plantar Fasciitis Sleep Support brand- it's just less bulky to wear at night than most.
Now the idea behind these splints is to try and keep the foot and ankle structures stretched out all night in order to promote healing and avoid morning pain and stiffness that is so common in plantar fasciitis. Only a few randomized controlled trials have actually tested out this interesting idea. For instance:
-volunteers in one study were randomized to get either custom foot inserts, anterior night splints, or custom foot inserts and anterior night splints (Roos 2006). At 12 weeks, all groups improved significantly with no significant differences found in pain among the three groups at any point in time.
-in another study, patients wore either custom shoe inserts, over-the-counter arch supports, or night splints (Martin 2001). At 12 week follow-up, all groups improved with no significant differences between them.
-night splints were compared to no night splint use in this randomized controlled trial (Powell 1998). After one month, the group that wore the night splints showed greater improvement compared to the control group.
As you can see, these night splints ARE effective in treating plantar fasciitis-but note that they seem to be just as effective as over-the-counter or custom foot inserts too. Therefore, since night splints can be a pain to sleep with for a lot of people, I recommend you try them as a last resort after you've tried more conservative things such as foot inserts. I have suffering with plantar fasciitis for as long as i can remember...I used to just get new shoes every few months, but that got expensive! I saw this brace 2 days ago was skeptical to buy it cause it was kinda pricey but i wore it one night and was able to get up and walk with NO pain right from bed...I'm only 27 and i used to get outta bed and walk like a 80 year old! I'm so happy i found this product!!

I just bought this gizmo 2 weeks ago for some horrible plantar fasciitis I have had for the last month or so. Within in the first week my heal no longer hurts in the morning. There maybe still a fleeting moment of pain here and there but this thing is awesome. I tried shoe inserts, new shoes, advil around the clock and even stopped running with no change. Sleep and sit around the house when I'm home with this on and I'm a new man. Highly recommended.

I have had the opposite experience. The arch in the plastic does not fit my body, and so it slips down and is very uncomfortable in the night. I end up tearing it off while I'm sleeping. When it does stay on, my heel feels no different in the morning! Not good for me. Darn!

I have been suffering from plantar fasciitis for about 7 months, but just recently found out what it was that was wrong. I've known a few other people who had plantar fasciitis and suggested some sort of foot brace. So I found this one, happened to be the cheapest on Amazon so I purchased it. I was very skeptical, that's why I went for the least expensive! All I can say is WOW!! I wore it last night for the first time. It was very, very comfortable to sleep with it on. When I woke up in the morning, I removed it and started to walk. It was the best feeling ever! I had forgotten what it felt like to not have that pain in my heel!
Another great part for me was while I was at work at my desk job, my heel would not hurt when I got up to walk somewhere after sitting for over an hour. Normally I would be limping the first few steps. I am so incredibly impressed by this and I can hardly wait to wear it again tonight!
The pain in my heel did return by about 6pm tonight, which I expected since I had only worn it one time. But 8 hours with the brace on and 12 hours with the brace off is fine with me! You won't be disappointed with this purchase.
