3 out of 5 stars Handy for some purposes   March 18, 2008

This counter is really nice to use when I'm doing several laps in the pool, or if I'm timing myself on a specific set, but I don't find it easy to use if I want to vary the distance of my sets. Reading up on how to use it and setting it up were very time consuming for me. Now that I know how to use it, I only use it if I'm doing one LONG set or a series of sets that measure the same in distance. The numbers are big and easy to read though and it seems to work great for those purposes. (It does slow down the turn-around time at the end of the pool slightly in order to hit the button.)

1 out of 5 stars Should Be More User Friendly   March 14, 2008

I read the instructions, I am somewhat computer literate and my husband is VERY computer literate but this is just NOT a user friendly device.

Just when I had it working for my simple little laps around the pool, it fell and the plastic face broke off of it and I haven't had the patience to work with it again. I am now actually spending $165.00 to get a 31" pace clock!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Basically Useless   March 3, 2008

Where to start with this almost useless product.

Let's start with the programming:

- Metric support is in meters. Fine if you have a metric pool. But your choice for English system is MILES. Miles, really? Gee, my pool is 25 YARDS long. So I am forced to use meters for really no apparent reason. And the difference matters on long swims.

- Getting the timer into a mode to count laps and time (why I bought it) is quite confusing and non-intuitive, and I am an engineer. The unit has a lot of features but all I really need are:
* Count laps and split times (maybe count down laps when I am doing a specific distance.)
* Let me setup workouts with rest periods.

Now I can do the first 2 with this timer, but doing it is difficult, especially once the unit is submerged (using it is worse). I can't do the 3rd (sets with rest periods). It's a hell of a lot easier with my cheap Timex watch.

Now for the mechanicals, which is MUCH worse:

- The unit won't stick to the wall of any pool I swim in (3 different ones tried). I've tried all the attachments including the bracket. With the bracket it floats up even with a significant weight on it. Useless. During every swim I have found the unit off the wall.
I took to putting it on deck and using open turns and tapping it. That *might* be ok if not for the next issue.

- The unit frequently double counts when tapped during a swim. Come on, Finis. Put a little smarts in your software. Debouncing is embedded programming 101. If a 50 meter lap takes 2-3 seconds instead of 40, chances are it is a double bounce. It's not rocket science.

I'm giving up on it and going back to a watch. I think a decent in-pool timer can be designed, but this is not it.

1 out of 5 stars Getting Better!   February 8, 2008

Getting Better! I contacted FINIS, Inc. and they said they have a better set of instructions that you can download or they can send them to you. Unlike Recreation Supply Company, FINIS, Inc. does provide excellent customer service. I am looking forward to the new set of instructions.

The first instruction sheet measured nearly 14 by 15 inches and contained small print that is not laid out well on both sides which are in English only.

Recreation Supply Company has a vague return policy that they can interpret as they wish and once you submerge an item that is designed to be submerged it is no longer in new condition and they will not even take it back minus a 15% restocking fee. I contacted them by phone and answered the question truthfully when asked whether I had submerged it and if you go to their website to request an RA (Return Authorization) number then they make you check a box that says you understand their return policy. I now understand why Recreation Supply Company has money to advertise in the magazine, "International Aquatics."

FINIS makes an underwater SwiMP3 MP3 (version 2) player that is awesome and I will give the Lap Counter another chance.

The counter is high quality. It is easy to use and has larger numbers and easy to see while swimming.
