Customer Reviews:
great roof rackFebruary 20, 2008 The installation was fairly simple, even though the instruction is a bit difficult to decipher (mostly small pictures -- international language, I guess). It provides 2 keys, which adds another degree of convenience. On my ML430, it is high enough that a pair of ski have enough clearance when they are paired back to back (the flat sides facing each other). That means it really holds 6 pairs of ski.
Construction is sturdy enough that I don't have any issue with it. I also don't hear any wind noise at all. Other than the installation instruction (or lack thereof), I see no issue at all, even for someone who is only slightly mechanically inclined.
Of course, this is straightly for ski or snowboard only. This setup cannot be modified to hold a cargo bay or a bike rack later, unlike some of the more basic cross bar setup. The ski rack is part of the cross bar and cannot be taken off. I have compared the alternatives and this is the most cost effective for my current usage -- "ski-only".
Thule Snowcat Ski RackFebruary 9, 2008 Good product and was as represented. Reasonable price. No problems, but shipping was a little slow due to Christmas season and shipping distance.
Decent Rack. Hard To Assemble. Horrible Directions.January 2, 2008 I ordered this from LL Bean. The package was heavily damaged but nothing inside seemed to be damaged and all parts were included. Assembly of this ski rack is a complete pain. The angles you need to work at are uncomfortable and the bolts don't thread easily. the directions completely suck.
Overall the ski rack serves its purpose. Once it is on the car it securely holds skis. It claims to hold 6 pairs but from what I can see there is no way you can hold skis while they are connected. I need to take the skis apart and lay them flat. I would not expect to hold more then 3 pairs of skis on this rack.

This product was perfect for my application, I did not have cross bars on my 2003 Mercades ML350 roof rack. The 5401 Snowcat did not require them, it saved me $300.00 from my Dealer. I have never installed anything like this before and it only took 15 minutes.
